Prepping for the Euro summer with Triangl's Jaynee Penny

She's a global jet-setter and Creative Director of Triangl, the international swimwear brand celebrated for its distinctive prints, enduring styles, and stunning campaigns that have us all longing for an endless summer, so how does Jaynee Penny embrace the Triangl way, and carry out her days?

We caught up with Jaynee, who spends half of the year in Bondi—where Triangl has an office—and the other half in Europe, to find out how she gains inspiration for new collections, where she's headed this Northern Hemisphere summer, her top three travel destinations, and what she gets up to when back home in Bondi.

Tell us a little bit about your role at Triangl. How do you spend a typical day?

A typical day depends on where I am in the world. If it's Bondi I'll get to the office in the morning, look through our sales, and plan for collections that are coming up—which might mean designing products, model casting or location scouting.

There's a real ongoing element to my role, where there's always new concepts I'll be designing or photoshoots I'll be organising.

When I'm in Europe, I execute all the work we've done at home—it's a Triangl summer tour and the team travels to different countries managing our photoshoots, and creating content.

"This year there are a few new places we're heading to that I've never visited—think desert safari vibes, and then there will definitely be Ibiza and the south of France in there, two places that are Triangl's home in Europe."

We always choose the location first—we'll pick where we see our Triangl girls travelling around the world, or where we think they'd like to go, and design collections around that.

What do you predict will be some of the biggest summer and swimwear trends this year?

At Triangl we don't chase trends. Our shapes are timeless, and they change very slightly between collections—where we release 16 a year.

We're always dropping fun new prints and textures, and I think you can be more adventurous with swimwear. Someone might wear mostly black in clothing, but with swimwear you can be more expressive, like with the velvet texture collection we've got out now.

I'm seeing a lot of frills, bows, wraparound details, skimpy bottoms and sporty looks at the moment, but we're a timeless brand—we want to be worn every summer, and I love seeing girls in collections from years ago.

Let's chat northern hemisphere summer plans! What are you most looking forward to?

They're very much in line with Triangl's plans. I'll be there for work, and I try to have work complement where friends and family are going to be.

I'm hoping to be at the Monaco Grand Prix, where my husband Richy is DJing, and will be heading to Malta for FISHER'S event, TRIIP Festival where all our friends will be and where Richy is also DJing, as well as the south of France for my brother's wedding. Overall, I'm really looking forward to having a base in Ibiza.

What three places would you recommend to those mapping out their travels?

These would be the places I always go back to—Ibiza, the south of France, and for a city I love Paris and exploring the food, shopping and hotels. I'm one of those tourists that will go to the Eiffel Tower at night as soon as I get there, because I love seeing it all lit up.

"When in Ibiza, my local would be the Fish Shack, for a beach lunch it's Cala Gracioneta, evening dinners are spent at Casa Maca, and my favourite club would be Ushuaïa (because it finishes before midnight!)."

Talk us through your travel essentials. Is there anything you can't live without?

Definitely Triangl bikinis, a book for the plane—I'm a physical book person, and eye gel.

Do you have any tips for managing post-long haul flight jetlag?

I'm so bad with jetlag, I'll arrive and try to get some sleep on the local time zone, and if I can't sleep, I'll whinge about it the next day!

I'll swim in the ocean, have saunas… But really nothing works for me.

What's your perfect day in Bondi look like?

It would be waking up pretty early like the rest of Bondi, walking down to my gym, Beachouse, doing a weight session there, having arvo drinks at Rocker—it has such a good vibe, dinner at Raw Bar, and watching the sunset.

You travel to some stunning destinations, yet there's no place like home! What do you miss most about our suburb when you're away?

The routine of the early mornings, the beach swims—there's nothing like bumping into 10 people you know on your walk down there—the community, and seeing family and friends.
